A Journey of Discovery

A Journey of Discovery: Unraveling My Autism in Midlife

As I sat down to write this blog post, I felt a mixture of apprehension and relief. The act of putting my thoughts into words is both an intimate practice and a powerful form of catharsis, helping me make sense of a life that has, until recently, felt enigmatic at best. Just a few short years ago, I was blissfully unaware that the puzzle of my life would eventually reveal autism as its defining piece.

The Awakening

It all started when I stumbled upon an article about adult autism. The finely woven words about sensory sensitivities, social interactions, and the nuances of the neurodivergent experience resonated with me deeply. As I read, I found myself nodding in recognition at descriptions of behaviors that I had spent my life masking to fit into societal expectations. I wasn't just reading about someone else's life; I was peering into a mirror that reflected my own quirks, struggles, and the disquieting sensation of being 'different' throughout the years.

Growing up, I often felt like an outsider. While my peers would seamlessly navigate social interactions, I found myself standing on the sidelines, overwhelmed by the noise, the multitude of conversations swirling around me like a storm. Simple gatherings transformed into pulsating mazes of anxiety where I would retreat into quiet corners, desperately searching for an escape route.

It wasn’t until I began to review my life in the context of autism that I could connect the dots. My late-night bouts of insomnia, fueled by a racing mind that honed in on every detail, the discomfort I experienced in crowded spaces, and my penchant for routines all fell into place. It seemed that indeed, I could be on the autism spectrum. The realization was both affirming and jarring.

Facing Denial

After gathering courage, I began to share my thoughts and findings with my close friends and family. Their reactions ranged from skepticism to outright denial. “But you’re so social!” “You can hold conversations just fine!” These well-meaning yet dismissive comments came like a tidal wave, and I struggled to defend my emerging identity. They couldn’t see past the mask I had worn for so long.

It felt like walking through a fog. The people I cherished most couldn’t validate my experience, leading me to feel isolated in my discovery. Phrases that had once been a source of comfort turned into daggers of doubt—the disbelief of loved ones weighed heavily on my shoulders. Their refusal to accept my awakening as anything more than an 'excuse' for my idiosyncrasies eclipsed my newfound understanding.

Despite the resistance from those closest to me, I reached out to a specialist who then confirmed my suspicions and provided me with the validity I had been searching for. I found solace in the online community. Support groups and forums specializing in adult autism became my refuge, a sanctuary where understanding thrived, and the complexities of neurodiversity were embraced. I found people who echoed my experiences. Conversations blossomed, and I finally felt, for the first time, that I wasn’t alone in navigating this labyrinth of understanding.

Learning to Cope

Navigating life as a late-diagnosed individual on the autism spectrum presents its own set of challenges, but I have found strategies that help me cope. Here are some of the methods I have integrated into my life:

1. Self-Acceptance: The cornerstone of my journey has been learning to accept myself without reservation. Acceptance does not demand perfection. It is a reminder that my quirks and struggles do not define me negatively; they are simply facets of my identity.

2. Mindfulness Practices: I have embraced mindfulness and meditation as tools for grounding myself when the world seems overwhelmingly chaotic. Sitting quietly with my thoughts, practicing deep breathing, or focusing on sensory elements around me helps me regain control.

3. Setting Boundaries: Part of my self-care has involved learning to set boundaries. Whether it’s leaving a social gathering early or asking for quieter environments, standing up for my needs has made a remarkable difference in my overall well-being. This step was is the hardest step for me to integrate and maintain. I still sometimes struggle with this.

4. Creating a Routine: Establishing routines has offered me a comforting structure. Late nights are my sacred time—predictable and serene. I indulge in rituals like late night snacking, journaling, or a solitary walks under the stars.

5. Asking for Help: It’s not always easy, but I’ve started reaching out and asking for support when I need it. Friends who understand and respect my journey, even if they cannot fully accept it, provide a valuable source of strength.

A Hopeful Outlook

As I reflect on my journey of self-discovery, I realize that while I may have unraveled a key part of my identity, it is just the beginning of an ongoing exploration. Coming to terms with my autism has been about understanding not just the challenges, but also the strengths that come with it. I am learning to embrace the parts of me that society often shuns and finding my voice in the broader narrative of neurodiversity.

Though denied by friends and family in my pursuit of identity, I am emboldened by my community. The roads ahead may still be fraught with misunderstandings, but they are also filled with opportunities for growth, resilience, and connection. In my experience of late-life discovery, I have found not just the label of autism, but a continual journey toward authenticity, awareness, and the understanding that it is never too late to embrace who you are.

Many individuals on the journey to fully embracing their true selves and finding their unique place within society are not seeking attention or personal gain. If someone you care about expresses that they believe they may be autistic, please refrain from dismissing their feelings or invalidating their experience. Instead of insisting they’re mistaken about themselves, consider the power of offering acceptance and understanding. What harm is there in supporting them with love and compassion? Cherish and embrace those you hold dear.

Here’s to living boldly in the skin we inhabit, each step a testament to our journey, each challenge a pathway to self-growth. Thank you for letting me share my story. May we continue to uplift, support, and celebrate one another on this remarkable journey of life.
